SSI Eligibility Checker
Quick check whether you might qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) based on the basic federal rules. This tool is informational only — the SSA makes the final determination. New York State adds a small supplement on top of the federal amount.
How the SSI rules work in 2026
Supplemental Security Income is a needs-based federal program for people who are disabled, blind, or age 65 or older, and who have very limited income and resources. Unlike SSDI, it does not require any work history.
The asset limits
- Individual: countable resources generally must be below $2,000.
- Couple: countable resources generally must be below $3,000.
Your primary home, one vehicle, household goods, burial plots, and certain other items do NOT count toward the limit. Cash, additional vehicles, second properties, and investment accounts DO count.
The federal maximum benefit
- Individual: up to about $994/month federal payment in 2026.
- Couple: up to about $1,491/month federal payment in 2026.
- New York supplement: small additional amount on top, varies by living arrangement.
How income reduces SSI
Most income reduces SSI almost dollar-for-dollar after small monthly exclusions. Earned income (wages) is treated more favorably than unearned income (pensions, gifts). In-kind support — such as free housing or food from family — also reduces SSI.
What happens if you qualify
In New York, SSI eligibility generally conveys automatic Medicaid eligibility, which is one of the most important practical benefits. New York is a 1634 state, meaning you do not need to apply separately for Medicaid in most cases.
