How to Apply for a Social Security Card in the Bronx

Getting a Social Security Number (SSN) and card is one of the first administrative steps for new residents, new workers, and parents of newborns in the Bronx. Because New York is a major immigration gateway, this application is common across the borough. This guide walks through every step: what documents are required, which Bronx office to visit, and what to expect in 2026.

The quick answer

To apply for a first-time Social Security card in the Bronx, complete Form SS-5, gather original documents proving identity, age, and U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status, and visit any SSA office in the Bronx in person. The service is free and the card arrives by mail within 7-14 business days. First-time SSN applications cannot be done online — they must be in person. Spanish-speaking representatives are available at most Bronx offices.

Who needs to apply for an SSN in person

Three groups of Bronx residents typically apply for a first-time Social Security card: U.S. citizens applying for the first time (often parents getting an SSN for a newborn), lawful permanent residents and work-authorized immigrants who need an SSN for employment, and individuals who have never been issued an SSN. Every initial application must be made in person — there is no online option for a first SSN, regardless of citizenship status.

If you already have an SSN and need a replacement card, the process is different — see our guide on replacing a Social Security card. This page covers first-time applications only.

Required documents

  • Completed Form SS-5 (download from ssa.gov or pick up at any Bronx SSA office).
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship for citizens: original birth certificate, U.S. passport, or Certificate of Naturalization (originals only).
  • Proof of identity: state-issued ID, driver's license, or U.S. passport.
  • For non-citizens: current immigration documents (Form I-551 green card, I-94 record, EAD card) and unexpired foreign passport.
  • For children under 12: birth certificate plus proof of the parent's identity.
  • For children age 12 or older: the child must be present at the interview.

The step-by-step process

01

Step 1 - Complete Form SS-5

Download the Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5) from ssa.gov, or pick one up at any Bronx office. Fill it out completely before the visit to save time. Forms are available in English and Spanish.

02

Step 2 - Gather original documents

Bring ORIGINAL documents, not copies. SSA staff will photocopy them on site and hand the originals back the same day. Do not mail originals for a first-time application.

03

Step 3 - Visit a Bronx SSA office

Walk in or call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment at the office that serves your address (Concourse Village, Tremont, Fordham, South Bronx, or White Plains Rd). Appointments reduce wait time significantly.

04

Step 4 - The interview

An SSA representative will review the form and documents. The interview takes 15-30 minutes when paperwork is complete. Bilingual service is available — request a Spanish-speaking representative when you book or check in.

05

Step 5 - Receive your card by mail

The Social Security card arrives by U.S. mail at the address provided on Form SS-5, typically within 7-14 business days. The SSA does not issue cards on the spot under any circumstance.

What if you are not a U.S. citizen

Non-citizens can apply for an SSN if they are authorized to work in the United States. This includes lawful permanent residents (green card holders), work-authorized non-immigrants (H-1B, L-1, F-1 students with OPT authorization, and similar categories), and other specific groups. You must show your current immigration documents and unexpired foreign passport in addition to Form SS-5.

If you are not authorized to work but need an SSN for a specific federal benefit or state law requirement, a separate process applies. Most non-work-authorized individuals will not qualify for an SSN and should apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the IRS instead.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to apply for a Social Security card?
It is completely free. The Social Security Administration never charges a fee for issuing or replacing a card. Any third party that asks for payment to obtain an SSN is operating outside the official process.
Can I apply for my first SSN online?
No. First-time SSN applications must be done in person at an SSA office. Only certain replacement cards (not first-time applications) can be requested online for qualifying applicants.
Are Spanish-speaking representatives available?
Yes. Bronx SSA offices provide bilingual service in English and Spanish, given the borough's demographics. You can request a Spanish-speaking representative when scheduling your appointment or upon arrival.
What if my documents are in another language?
Foreign documents must be accompanied by a certified English translation. Bronx offices have Spanish-language support but written documents in other languages still need certified translations.
