How to Apply for Social Security Retirement in the Bronx

Applying for Social Security retirement is one of the most important financial decisions any Bronx resident will make — and the age at which you start benefits affects how much you receive for the rest of your life. This guide explains how to apply from the Bronx, the trade-offs between starting early and waiting, and what documents are required.

The quick answer

You can apply for Social Security retirement online at ssa.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or in person at any Bronx SSA office. Apply 3-4 months before you want benefits to start. The earliest claiming age is 62 (with permanently reduced benefits), Full Retirement Age is 66-67 depending on your birth year, and waiting until 70 maximizes the monthly benefit at about 8% per year of delay between FRA and 70.

When to apply: the timing question

The single most important retirement decision is when to start benefits, not how to apply. Starting at 62 permanently reduces the monthly benefit by 25-30% compared to Full Retirement Age. Waiting from FRA to age 70 increases the benefit by about 8% per year. Over a typical 20-30 year retirement, these differences add up to tens of thousands of dollars.

There is no universally right answer. Starting early can make sense for shorter-than-average life expectancy, immediate income needs, or specific tax-planning reasons. Waiting makes sense for healthy people with other income to bridge the gap and who want the largest possible inflation-protected monthly benefit. Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum Social Security retirement benefit?
In 2026 the maximum monthly benefit at Full Retirement Age was around approximately $3,822. The maximum at age 70 was around approximately $4,873. These figures are for high earners with 35+ years at the maximum taxable earnings, and they adjust each year with the cost-of-living adjustment.
Can I work while receiving retirement benefits?
Yes. Before Full Retirement Age there is an annual earnings limit — earning above it reduces your benefit temporarily. Once you reach FRA, you can earn any amount with no reduction. See our guide on when to apply for Social Security retirement.
What if I am divorced — can I claim on my ex-spouse's record?
Yes, if your marriage lasted at least 10 years, you are at least 62, and you are currently unmarried. You can claim up to 50% of your ex-spouse's full benefit. Your ex is not notified and your claim does not reduce their benefit.
How long does the application take to process?
Most retirement applications are processed within a few weeks. Apply 3-4 months before you want benefits to start to ensure timely first payment.
